The UAE at a Glance for Self-Drive Travellers
The United Arab Emirates is a compact federation of seven emirates with the densest highway network in the Middle East. From north to south the country measures roughly 200 km along its main inhabited corridor — Ras Al Khaimah to Abu Dhabi — making the entire country reachable within a few hours by car. Self-drive is the most flexible way to combine the urban energy of Dubai, the cultural depth of Sharjah and Abu Dhabi, the mountains of Ras Al Khaimah and Hatta, and the Indian Ocean coast around Fujairah and Khor Fakkan.

Cross-Emirate Trip Planning
The UAE is small enough that ambitious itineraries fit comfortably into a week. Three popular routings work well from a Dubai base:
The "Three Cities" loop (2 days)
Dubai → Abu Dhabi (visit Grand Mosque and Louvre) → return via Al Ain (Jebel Hafeet drive) → Dubai. Roughly 450 km of driving over two days. A sedan is sufficient, an SUV more comfortable.
The east-coast escape (2 days)
Dubai → Hatta (mountain dam, kayaking) → Fujairah coast (Al Aqah beaches, Snoopy Island snorkelling) → return via Khor Fakkan and Sharjah → Dubai. A scenic loop with mountain switchbacks and ocean views.
The northern emirates (1 day)
Dubai → Sharjah (Heart of Sharjah heritage) → Ajman (Corniche walk) → UAQ (lagoons) → Ras Al Khaimah (Jebel Jais summit) → Dubai. The lightest day in terms of stopping time, biggest in terms of contrast — coast, lagoons, and mountains in a single loop.

UAE Toll Systems — Salik and Darb
Two of the seven emirates operate electronic tolls. Both systems work without you doing anything — rental cars come with the relevant tag installed.
Salik (Dubai)
Eight gates across major Dubai roads — Sheikh Zayed Road, Garhoud Bridge, Al Maktoum Bridge, Al Safa, Airport Tunnel, and others. Each crossing costs 4 AED. Rental cars come with Salik tags. Toll charges are typically added to your final invoice or deducted from a pre-paid balance.
Darb (Abu Dhabi)
The Abu Dhabi toll system covers four main gates on bridges and entry points to Abu Dhabi island. Tolls apply during peak hours (7–9 am and 5–7 pm on weekdays). Rates vary 4–6 AED. Most rental vehicles registered in the UAE handle Darb automatically; charges added to the final bill.
No tolls in northern emirates
Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah, and Fujairah have no electronic toll systems. Driving is free of road charges across the northern half of the country.
